3rd Annual Akumal Comedy Festival

TULUM - April 29, 2014
PLAYA DEL CARMEN - April 30, 2014
AKUMAL - May 1-3, 2014

Laughs for a good cause

Stand Up! Records is proud to present The 3rd Annual Akumal Comedy Festival. The festival will take place on April 29 - May 3, 2014 in the heart of Mexico's lovely Mayan Riviera.

COMEDY FOR THE COMMUNITY
This completely not for profit comedy festival will feature over a dozen professional comedians from the United States performing eight shows across Tulum, Playa del Carmen, and Akumal over 5 days. The Festival is the brain child of Grammy Award winning president and founder of Stand Up! Records Dan Schlissel and comedian/actor Gus Lynch (Saving Silverman, North Country, I Spy), who seek to showcase the finest professional and fastest rising stars in stand up comedy, as well as the people, restaurants, and businesses of Akumal.  This festival will be fundraising for the Mexican Red Cross Tulum and Playa del Carmen Chapters, who are the first responders in most accidents and medical emergencies here in the Riviera Maya, and are completely self funded.
THE LINE UP
The Akumal Comedy Festival will be celebrated in 4 venues 5 days starting in Tulum on April 29, 2014. The Festival will culminate on Saturday, May 3, 2014 in Akumal featuring a "Best of the Fest" lineup, live music, regional dancers, street vendors and artists, as well as plenty of food, beverage, and alcohol options. Check out the festival schedule and our talent to see who’s performing!
Place of the Turtles
Akumal is a small beach-front tourist resort community 100 km (62 mi) south of Cancún, between the towns of Playa del Carmen and Tulum. It is located in Tulum Municipality in the state of Quintana Roo, Mexico. The 2010 census showed a population of 1,310 inhabitants. Akumal means "place of the turtles" in the Mayan language. The town was officially founded in 1958 as a community for scuba divers by Pablo Bush Romero--a Mexican businessman, diver, writer, historian, and archaeologist. Pablo Bush's family (the Bush/Wolfe family) still owns a large portion of Akumal. The diving group CEDAM originally came here to dive the Spanish shipwreck of the Matanceros whose remains still lie off the coast to this day. Akumal is also home to the ecological center CEA
  HOW TO GET HERE
By Car:
Akumal is located about 1 hour south of Cancun, between the towns of Playa Del Carmen and Tulum, and it’s about 10mins South of Puerto Aventuras. Head along the 307 Highway which is the north/south highway from Cancun to Chetumal until you see signs for “Akumal” or “Akumal Playa” The entrance to "Akumal Playa" is well marked by overhead highway signs and you will see it on your left just after a large overhead pedestrian bridge and local traffic fly over bridge. The median will not allow you to turn there. Just before the bridges slow down, stay in the left lane, and follow the RETORNO sign to Akumal Playa which points you to your left. This will let you cross over to the north bound lane of the highway. Stop and wait for traffic to clear and U-turn left now heading north on 307. You will take a right into the community of “Akumal Playa” immediately before the local traffic flyover bridge. If you pass under the bridges again you have gone too far. The road towards Akumal merges with the local traffic road shortly after the highway turn off. Please yield to the local traffic at the yield sign, and take care when merging. Once you have entered Akumal continue down the road towards the arch which marks the entrance to the village.
By Bus or Colectivo:
Get on the bus at Playa del Carmen or Tulum, and ask them to drop you off at Akumal. The bus will drop you off at the highway entrance to the village. Just walk down the road towards the beach (takes about 5mins) and you’ll be there!

Riviera Maya Food Festival

Playa del Carmen is a relatively new and very cosmopolitan city and this is reflected in its typical food. In the famous Fifth Avenue or the rest of the city you can find all kinds of restaurants with both traditional and novel food.
Because its location at the Caribbean Sea you can enjoy dishes based on fresh fish and seafood. Its culinary heritage includes typical Yucatecan, Mexican, international and fusion.
The important Italian colony that lies in Playa also influence the cuisine of this place. There are plenty of italian restaurants with traditional food or with the special touch of Mexico and Playa del Carmen.
Proof of the high gastronomic level of this city is the Taste of Playa Festival (www.tasteofplaya.com), which takes place every year since 2009, bringing together chefs from various local businesses to form a world-class culinary event. In just 5 celebrations it brought together more than 25 thousand people.
Also, this year, from 21 to 27 of April, will be held for the first time the  Riviera Maya Food Festival in which more than 31,000 people are expected to taste the dishes of the most renowned chefs in the area.
Some facts:
  • On Fifth Avenue we currently have over 200 restaurants .
  • A daily average of 120 different dishes are prepared at the tourist area.
  • The average cost of a gourmet meal is $400 pesos.
  • The average cost of a simple meal is less than $200 pesos.
